If you've been using the Web Password Filler (WPF) to launch web sessions and auto-fill credentials from your vault, it's time to make the switch. The Delinea Credential Manager (DCM) is now the recommended browser extension for both Secret Server and the Delinea Platform, and WPF is being phased out in favor of it. This article walks through what DCM does, how it compares to WPF, and how to install and configure it.
What is the Delinea Credential Manager?
DCM is Delinea's preferred browser extension for launching sessions and auto-filling credentials. It replaces Web Password Filler (WPF) as the recommended browser-based launcher for both Secret Server and the Delinea Platform.
At a high level, DCM gives you four things:
Web session launching. Launch web-based secrets directly from the browser. DCM detects matching URLs and auto-fills your login details for you.
Credential auto-fill. Automatically fill username and password fields on web applications using secrets stored in your vault — no copy-paste, no retyping.
Platform and Secret Server support. DCM works with both Delinea Platform URLs (.delinea.app) and Secret Server Cloud URLs (.secretservercloud.com), so you don't need a different tool depending on which product you're connecting to.
Connection Manager integration. You can launch websites and auto-fill credentials directly from Connection Manager using the DCM browser extension as the recommended launcher.
DCM vs. Web Password Filler (WPF)
If you're weighing whether to migrate, here's the side-by-side:
| DCM (Recommended) | WPF (Legacy) | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Actively developed, preferred extension | Being phased out in favor of DCM |
| Browser support | Chrome, Firefox, Edge (Brave and Vivaldi may also work) | Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Firefox, Safari |
| Credential fill | Auto-fill from vault secrets | Auto-fill from vault secrets |
| Web launching | Launch web secrets from browser | Launch web secrets from browser |
| Connection Manager integration | Website launching via Connection Manager — recommended extension | Website launching via Connection Manager (legacy) |
| Platform support | Platform + Secret Server | Platform + Secret Server |
Note: WPF still functions but is no longer recommended. New deployments should use DCM, and existing WPF users should plan to migrate.
How to install the DCM browser extension
DCM is available from the standard browser extension stores. Pick your browser:
Google Chrome — Install from the Google Chrome Web Store. Search for "Delinea Credential Manager."
Mozilla Firefox — Install from Firefox Browser Add-ons. Search for "Delinea Credential Manager."
Microsoft Edge — Install from Microsoft Edge Add-ons. Edge also supports Chrome Web Store extensions if you turn on "Allow extensions from other stores."
Brave / Vivaldi — Install from the Google Chrome Web Store. These Chromium-based browsers are not officially supported, but they generally work.
Enterprise deployment. For managed environments, DCM can be deployed via Group Policy or MDM. See the Delinea documentation for Chrome enterprise extension management guidance.
Connecting DCM to your vault
Once the extension is installed, here's the configuration flow:
- Install DCM. Download and install from the appropriate browser extension store (see the previous section).
- Click the DCM icon. Look for the Delinea icon in your browser toolbar and click it to open the extension popup.
- Add your vault URL. Enter your Platform URL (
https://<tenant>.delinea.app) or your Secret Server Cloud URL (https://<tenant>.secretservercloud.com). - Authenticate. Log in with your Platform or Secret Server credentials. Depending on your organization's settings, you may need to complete a second verification step (MFA).
- Browse to a web app. Navigate to any URL that matches a Web Password secret in your vault. DCM will offer to auto-fill credentials.
- Launch or auto-fill. Select the matching secret to auto-fill credentials, or use DCM to launch a web session directly from the vault.
Key takeaways
- Replace WPF with DCM. DCM is the recommended browser extension going forward; WPF is being phased out.
- Same browser stores. DCM is available from the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, and Microsoft Edge Add-ons. No separate download required.
- Works with Platform and Secret Server. Configure DCM with either your Platform URL or your SSC URL — both are supported.
- Local install required. DCM is a browser extension installed on each user's machine. Enterprise deployment via GPO or MDM is supported for managed environments.
- Works with Connection Manager. Use DCM with Connection Manager to launch websites and auto-fill credentials from your vault.
